Britney Spears’s Father, Jamie, Agrees to Step Down as Her Conservator

Britney Spears’s father, Jamie, has agreed to step down as conservator of her estate, TMZ reported on Thursday, August 12. This comes after the pop icon’s new lawyer, Mathew S. Rosengart, formally filed a petition for Jamie’s removal.

Per the outlet, Jamie’s lawyer has filed legal documents that state, “There are, in fact, no actual grounds for suspending or removing Mr. Spears as the Conservator of the Estate…and it is highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms. Spears’ best interests.”

The documents continue, “Nevertheless, even as Mr. Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests. So, even though he must contest this unjustified Petition for his removal, Mr. Spears intends to work with the Court and his daughter’s new attorney to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator.”

Britney’s ultimate goal, as she stated in court in late June, is to end her conservatorship, the legal arrangement she’s been under since 2008 that gives her no control over her life and finances.

According to TMZ, the new legal docs also say, “Regardless of his formal title, Mr. Spears will always be Ms. Spears’s father, he will always love her unconditionally, and he will always look out for her best interests.”

Jamie refutes claims he forced Britney to do anything under the conservatorship, including performing.

When asked for comment by TMZ, Rosengart said, “We are pleased but not necessarily surprised that Mr. Spears and his lawyer finally recognize that he must be removed. We are disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms. Spears and others.”

Britney Spears has made it clear she won’t perform in any professional setting so long as her father is in charge of her affairs. “I’m not gonna be performing on any stages anytime soon with my dad handling what I wear, say, do, or think,” she wrote on Instagram.
